Oscillot is a system that is designed to keep cats safely and effectively contained to their own yard.Cats use a jump-grab-climb action to scale fences, Oscillot is designed to counteract this technique by preventing the 'grab'.The system itself consists of a series of four-bladed aluminium paddles, which are mounted along fence lines between end posts containing bearings. When a cat tries to jump and scale the fence, they place a paw on the paddle, which then spins; the cat cannot get traction and falls safely back to the ground.

If I move house, can I take Oscillot with me?

Absolutely! Oscillot can be easily uninstalled from your old fence and reinstalled on your new fence when you move house. If you find you need some replacement components these can easily be ordered in our webshop.

Will installing Oscillot keep cats OUT of my yard?

Accepted Answer

We don't promote Oscillot to keep cats out as such. Whilst having Oscillot installed around the perimeter of your yard can certainly help to deter neighbouring and stray cats from entering your property, it is not fool-proof.The reason is that you have no influence on which high steps the cat has from the other side of the fence, such as wheelie bins and trees.Over the years we have gained experience with installation aimed at the wish to keep cats out of the garden. There are 2 ways in which this can be achieved.Installation on a very narrow fence (single plank). Then there is no edge for the cat to walk over the fence next to the paddle, and thus the passage over the fence and through the garden is avoided.Another option is, installation with a bracket a little higher against the inside of the fence. Before jumping into the garden (to the ground), the cat wants to place its paw against the inside of the fence. The presence of the paddle hinders this position and cats are not inclined to enter the garden.If the cat does enter the garden unexpectedly, it will probably panic and need some help to get out of the garden. Just open the gate door or place a step next to the fence. This can sometimes happen the first week after installation because neighbourhood cats want to continue their route through the garden as they are used to. If a neighbourhood cat does enter the garden, this is usually a one-off decision, they will not make this decision a second time. This is something to take into account the first week after installation. Our advice is to also let your own cats outside supervised during this period and to keep them inside at night.

Can the rotating parts rust and therefore turn less smoothly?

The parts of the system that ensure the rotation of the paddle are made of high-quality plastic and will therefore not rust.

Is maintenance required for the system?

Accepted Answer

We recommend checking 2 times a year to see if everything is still spinning well. The surface/fence on which the Oscillot system is mounted can expand and contract slightly due to the weather. With wooden fence panels, among others, the wood will expand and shrink depending on the temperature and humidity.Due to this movement, the Oscillot system may be slightly tighter in summerbetween the fence. And slightly looser in winter. Therefore we recommend, especially the first year after installation, checking the system when it first gets warm and very cold. In warm weather, whether everything is still spinning well. It is not a problem if it spins slightly less smoothly, as long as it still spins. And in winter, our advice is to move each paddle slightly to the left and right to see if it is not too loose and could come loose. If the play is insufficient, the axle pin inside the paddle can be adjusted. For a surface that does not move, such as brick and concrete, this adjustment is actually not necessary.

Is the system resistant to high winds/storms?

The system itself is resistant to strong winds/storms. However, it does require a solid surface. The Oscillot system can absorb some movement of the fence if it blows back and forth. But if the fence moves too much, the system can come loose because too much pressure is placed on the connecting posts. Then a paddle may come loose and have to be hung back. In addition, the cap or a pin may sometimes need to be replaced. A sturdy fence as a base is therefore our advice.

Does the paddle spin in the wind and does it make noise?

No, the Oscillot System does not spin in the wind and therefore does not make any noise because of the wind.

Is the system resistant to snow/frost?

The Oscillot system is resistant to snow and frost. When there is a lot of snow on the paddle, it can become a bit heavier and spin slower. You can wipe the snow off the paddle so that it can continue to spin properly.

What is the minimum height for installation and why?

Accepted Answer

We recommend a minimum height of 180 cm for the installation of the Oscillot System. At this jumping height, the cat will use a jump/grab/clamber technique to get onto a fence, with the Oscillot system ensuring that the cat has no grip, thereby interrupting the action when grabbing. At a lower height, the cat does not need the edge to pull itself up and can jump on top of/over the system in one arc. Like a cat would jump onto a dining table, in 1 jump on top. When the top of a fence is very narrow, about 2.5 cm, it can also be effective with a lower jumping height because there is actually no room to stand next to the Oscillot system. But this really varies per cat and situation. Hence our standard advice for a minimum height of 180 cm.

Question 17

Can a dining table / jacuzzi / wheelie bin stand next to the fence?

Our advice is not to place garden furniture next to the fence that creates a jumping distance of less than 180 cm to the fence. From a dining table/ wheelie bin/ bbq/ jacuzzi/ rain barrel, a cat can jump over/onto the system. This jumping distance is then often only a meter or less, and this is really not sufficient for a successful installation of the Oscillot System. Can there be a garden bench next to the fence?

Accepted Answer

Our advice is not to place garden furniture next to the fence that creates a jumping distance of less than 180 cm. That does not mean that from a garden bench the system cannot be effective for all cats. It differs per cat, and height from the garden bench to the top of the fence whether it will work well in this situation. Advice for installation in this situation is to mount it a bit higher with a bracket. For advice, it is always possible to send a photo.

Can the Oscillot system be used on a balcony?

Accepted Answer

The jumping height to a balcony railing is too low for a safe installation of the Oscillot system. Our advice is therefore to have a balcony completely enclosed. If Oscillot is used on a balcony, this is always at your own risk! With a narrow top of a balcony, the cat can be prevented from walking over the edge of the balcony. But the higher the balcony is located, the greater the consequences if things go wrong and the cat falls down. So that is why we also advise, for the safety of the cat, to have a balcony completely closed off.

Which fences are less or not suitable for using the Oscillot System?

Accepted Answer

Fences with an increased risk are fences that can be climbed very easily, such as horizontal wooden fences, reed mats, trellises, ivy grids. A fence that is so easy to climb can still have an effective system for some cats, but then a very narrow top of the fence is desired. A climbable fence with a wide top (wider than 3 cm) usually does not work well. Additionally, extra planks can be placed at the top of a horizontal wooden fence to avoid the step effect at the top. Or plexiglass sheets can be added.Fences with round arches or a fence overgrown with ivy are also less suitable fences to protect with the Oscillot system.

Is the system easy to install yourself?

The system is relatively easy to install with our installation manual. There is, however, a difference in installation difficulty per fence type. When the Oscillot system needs to be installed on concrete posts, you will have to drill holes in the concrete posts and each paddle will have to be cut to size. Installing entire sections on a wooden fence is easier.
